I like to think of myself as a freedom finder.
I used to consider myself a freedom seeker.
The change from seeker to finder merely lies in the fact that someone who finds, at least in my eyes, is someone who creates opportunities with what they have in front of them. Whereas someone who seeks, at least in my eyes, is someone who doesn’t trust in their ability to spot them right under their noses when they’re clearly there.
There’s energy to words and it helps gigantically to use the right ones — choose wisely.
But back to finding freedom — I believe it is found when one creates it.
There used to be a contradiction in my head that used to think of freedom as the liberty to do whatever one wants whenever one wants it. I don’t think this way anymore. I think we create freedom when we structure what we have with what we can and direct that available energy toward feeling freer.
Discipline and freedom are friends. When you create structures in your life that allow for you to create space for what you want you are creating freedom.
There are non-negotiables in each and every single day of our lives — it’s human nature. Whether it be complying with responsibilities from your daily job, attending family and friend events that do not necessarily spark your joy at the moment, or reaching out to people that sit way outside of your comfort zone in order to get the job you want — these are responsibilities that ultimately create compound effects that allow you to be free to get what you want.
These are responsibilities that create effects for you to get out of your own damn way.
I do believe I’ve been my biggest obstacle most of the time in finding the freedom that I crave. I’ve fought with structures and discipline thinking of it as something that blocks me from feeling the way I want to feel — light. But when results come at the hands of being uncomfortable for a while, you’ll find that freedom is the comfort that is always worth investing in through time, effort, and aligned action.
Maybe you’re not like me and you’re not the one standing in the way of creating what you want. But today, just for a moment, sit and think “How am I standing in the way of finding the freedom that I want?” and most importantly, “What am I avoiding doing at the moment that will ultimately help me create it?”
Food for thought.
